Minnesota Trend

Hey folks, I'll be out for the next few days in Hualien, Taiwan, living with a local tribe and learning the art of banana leaf fiber weaving. Yep, this is my awesome life! There will be a great post at the end of this weekend, for sure, but for now, here's another daily life update:

We've had our first couple of meetings with Ping Ping, the designer for "The Master Builder" (and department chair). Ping Ping is a delight to work with, and makes decisions about the show instintaneaously. She keeps thanking us for being here, and saying that we're a dream for her (they produce their shows differently here, usually in a much tighter time frame). I'm really looking forward to working with her! She's so kind, too--she bought us dessert!

The cutest key lime pie!

And these awesome things--it's vanilla bean pudding in an egg shell! They were delicious!

I padded out the dress form to be the same size and shape of my actress today.

We had a corset-making lecture yesterday, where Jim showed us how to make 4 different periods of corsets (since we are all making real, theatrical corsets for this show). Emily was our Guinea pig, and wore a corset to demonstrate the shape you get from an 18th century corset.

TINY waist!

And then there's this gem of a photograph:

Jim, demonstrating why you hand-stitch 2 crescent-shaped pads into the interior of the corset, and Emily, making one of her many awesome faces.

We went back to Shilin night market (the one with all the clothes) to look for new running shoes. The ones I brought are 2 years old and starting to break down after many Utah and Santa Fe hikes. As usual, I bought much more than I came for. I spent US$132 and got:

1 pair of brand new Reebok running shoes (US$63--these aren't any cheaper here)
2 dresses
2 tank tops
1 pair of running shorts
1 belt
5 pairs of socks
4 bracelets
1 jade necklace
1 large fresh squeezed juice
1 stick of candied strawberries
2 beers (Coors Light--the first American beer I've seen)
1 appetizer order of sweet potato fries
1 giant sandwich at a nice cafe in Taiwan

I love it here. :)

Also, I found these:

Indeed, the trend in Minnesota IS sweatpants. How did you know?

Well, I should get to bed, I have to be up at 6AM to hop a bus! Zijian!
